The Highway Engineer Who Transformed Colorado Roads, a Colorado History Book Talk & Signing
Author Tom Noel will discuss and sign Charlie Davis Vail: The Highway Engineer Who Transformed Colorado Roads ($20.00). This book is a biography of the longtime Chief Engineer of the Colorado Department of Highways who also served simultaneously as the President of the Democratic Club of Colorado. This made for some interesting political arrangements including his feud with Governor and then U.S. Senator Big Ed Johnson over who controlled patronage and which routes should be favored.
Vail professionalized and expanded the highway department helping to survey and design what are now Vail Pass and I-70. Both the pass and the town are named for him. He was involved with many major highways including many arguments about which road and which pass should be selected for major highways.
